“The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart criticized media coverage of President-elect Trump's inauguration, questioning whether some speculation is doing more harm than good.
“We don't know what will happen when Donald Trump takes over. Unfortunately, we can't see into the future, but we must prepare for any outcome. This many pants off at such an early hour. I don't know how helpful that is,” Stewart said in the first few minutes of Thursday's episode of “The Weekly Show.”
“But I think it's important to stay aware of the situation,” he added.
Just before interviewing Sen. Bernie Sanders (R-Vt.) on the show, Stewart rejected reports about Trump's transition, insisting the country had experienced a “tumultuous” year.
“We seem to be in a transition period where we're not sure if the ground we're standing on is solid. But the press is telling us that we're the roadrunners and the coyotes, and that the coyotes are running up the cliffs. “And then we just look down and realize there's nothing under our feet, and now we're hurtling towards death,” Stewart said in a Looney Tunes cartoon. I made a joke referring to the character.
“Because the press is always very cautious,” he added.
The political cartoon said it was “strange” to see President-elect Trump vow to carry out some of the policy goals he agrees with, considering Stewart has been a vocal critic of the incoming commander-in-chief. “Things,” he said.
“For someone who has complained that I want our government to be more efficient, more responsive, and make fundamental changes, I now know that its tasks are being carried out by a group of people I don’t necessarily trust. “It's for my own good to see. That's good manners,” he said.
“But I guess that's what it means to lose an election, hey, it's not like that, you don't have the right to dictate anymore,” he added.
