Irish-language rap comedy Kneecap has won top honors at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifas), winning a total of seven awards, including the headline award for Best British Independent Film.
The Belfast-set film stars rappers Liam Óg Ó Hanai, Naoise Ó Cairein and JJ Ó Dochartay (also known as Mo Challa, Mowgli Bop and DJ Proby), and stars Rich Directed by Peppiatt, the film stars Michael Fassbender as a former Republican militia member. The three leads won Best Co-Leading Performance, and Peppiatt also won Best Debut Screenplay. The knee cap has already won four craft awards. Announced in November.
Mr. Peppiatt said in his acceptance speech: “I have to say there is an irony in the fact that the best British films are Irish films.” The film is co-financed by the BFI, Filth Alien/Screen Ireland, Northern Ireland Screen and others. Ireland enters Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
Lungano Nyoni won the Bifa Director Award in 2017 for her previous film, I'm Not a Witch, which featured a breakthrough performance by actor Susan Chardy, and best director for On Becoming a Guinea Fowl. Award-winning. Other double winners of the night included in-game Shakespearean documentary Grand Theft Hamlet (winner of Best Documentary Feature Debut Director and Raindance Maverick) and Lucknow-set crime drama Santosh ( Best Original Screenplay and Best Breakthrough Producer).
Although excluded from the screenplay/director category, Mike Leigh's new film Hard Truths won a major award for Best Actor for Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
