NYC Mayor Adams eyes executive action to roll back sanctuary policies

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) said Sunday he is considering executive action to bypass the Democratic-controlled New York City Council and modify the city's sanctuary status.

In an interview with WCBS-TV, “Marcia Kramer's The Point” Adams asked Kramer to authorize him to circumvent the City Council's refusal to repeal New York City's sanctuary policy, which has hampered Immigration and Customs Enforcement's efforts to remove criminal illegal aliens. He said he is looking for.

“I don't want to go into a meeting with the border emperor with preconceived notions or assumptions.”

He claimed he had been advocating for greater cooperation between ICE and New York City law enforcement since before the November election.

He cited the City Council's resistance to changing the city's sanctuary law, saying, “The City Council has made it clear they're not going to change it.”

“I think they're wrong,” Adams declared.

He explained that he is investigating his executive order powers to determine how to circumvent city councils to protect communities from illegal aliens who commit violent crimes.

“As the City Council has made clear, we are not going to change the Sanctuary City Act to allow this. [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] To track down dangerous criminals. Once they made that clear, I went to Plan B and asked, 'What are my options and what are my privileges?'” Adams said.

He spoke about plans to meet with President-elect Donald Trump's next border czar, Tom Homan, on Thursday. The Mayor has agreed to work with the administration to address New York City's immigration crisis.

Asked about the goals of the sit-in with Homan, Adams told WCBS: “It's about hearing very clearly the message and the goals of the Border Czar and how we can work together to keep the Border Patrol safe.” We want to protect our borders and ensure that our city remains the safest big city in America. ”

“I don't want to go into a meeting with a border emperor with preconceptions or assumptions. I want to go in and sit down with him and say, 'Give me your vision, and tell me what you think. “Let me share my vision,'' he continued.

Mr. Adams called public safety for New Yorkers the “north star” and said his mission was to “deal with the small number of violent criminals that come into our country.”

The mayor said he specifically wanted to address Torren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang that has significantly increased its influence in the United States over the past year.

The mayor emphasized the importance of border security and expressed concern about whether Venezuela is releasing prisoners and allowing its criminal citizens to flee to the United States, as President Trump has repeatedly asserted. .

Adams indicated he would be open to deporting criminal illegal aliens before they are convicted, but said he would like criminals to serve time first.

“My belief has always been that if they are arrested, they should serve time because they are not giving justice to their victims, so they can come back as soon as they leave the country. Because I can,'' Adams explained.

He expressed the need for easier legal routes for foreigners pursuing the American Dream to immigrate to the United States, but also suggested guiding them to settle in areas of need.

“We're dealing with population issues in a lot of municipalities. Why are we saying to the people we're allowing into the country, 'You're going where we need you, you're filling the population.' Why don't you say, 'What job are we looking for?'

Adams was asked whether he would consider allowing ICE to reopen its Rikers Island outpost.

Last week, New York City Councilman Robert Holden, also a Democrat, challenged Adams on the city's sanctuary policy by reopening ICE offices to facilitate communication between the city and federal immigration officials. He demanded that the “tough story” be substantiated.

Adams told Kramer on Sunday: “I heard a council member say something that sounded like a litmus test. I'm not interested in litmus tests. I'm interested in solving problems.” Ta.
