Tiger Woods returning to play with son Charlie at PNC Championship

Tiger Woods will return to the PNC Championship with his 15-year-old son Charlie in his first match since July's British Open after undergoing his sixth back surgery three months ago.

Woods has played in the 36-hole PNC Championship with Charlie every year since 2020.

Players who have won a major or The Players Championship and their families, usually children, are invited to this tournament.

“Playing together is something we look forward to, and it's always more special when you're surrounded by friends and family,” Woods said.

The PNC Championship will be held on December 21st and 22nd at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, with 20 teams participating. New to this year's tournament are Fred Couples and son-in-law Hunter Hanneman, and Trevor Immelman and son Jacob.

The tournament is sanctioned by PGA Tour Champions, so Woods will be able to ride in a cart, which is key to his play.

He chose to skip last week's Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, where he is the tournament organizer. That's because his game wasn't sharp enough to compete against a field of top 40 players in the world.

Woods set a Masters record in April by qualifying for the 24th consecutive time, but he failed to qualify for the other three majors. He underwent a microdiscectomy in September to alleviate pain in his leg, making it his sixth surgery in his lower back.

His most major surgery was fusion surgery in 2017, and he won the Tour Championship a year later, followed by his 15th major and fifth Masters title in 2019. His last win was at the ZOZO Championship in Japan in the fall of 2019, where he tied. Sam Snead set a record with 82 wins on the PGA Tour.

However, it is unclear how often he will be able to play in 2025.

“As far as my commitment going forward is once a month, yes, I can say that as many times as I want,” Woods said last week. “But I really don't know. I'm working on rehab and I'm still getting stronger and getting better and feeling better, so give myself the best chance for next year.”

The PNC Championship will feature Annika Sorenstam's 13-year-old son Will McGee and 89-year-old Gary Player. Nelly Korda returns to play alongside her father, former Grand Slam tennis champion Petr Korda.
