President-elect Trump announced Tuesday that Ron Johnson, former ambassador to El Salvador, will become ambassador to Mexico in the next administration.
Johnson, who shares his name with the Republican senator from Wisconsin, will fill one of the most high-profile diplomatic posts in the incoming Trump administration. President Trump has already threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico if it doesn't crack down on immigration and drug flows at its southern border, and has spent much of his first term sparring with Mexican leaders across the border. Before becoming ambassador to El Salvador, Johnson worked for the CIA for more than 20 years. He is a veteran who served as a Green Beret.
Mr. Johnson won the job by defeating Mr. Trump ally and Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake.
During his first term, President Trump appointed Christopher Landau, a lawyer with little diplomatic experience, as ambassador to Mexico.
Landau's father, a longtime U.S. diplomat with extensive experience in Latin America, was well-received in Mexico as a serious interlocutor amid tensions over President Trump's policies toward Mexico.
