Man arrested after Rep. Nancy Mace says she was accosted

A man was arrested Tuesday after Rep. Nancy Mace (RS.C.) said she was accosted.

“Tonight, I was physically assaulted on Capitol grounds over my fight to protect women. Capitol Police arrested him.” Mace said in a post about X:

U.S. Capitol Police confirmed the incident and said they had arrested a suspect on suspicion of assaulting members of Congress.

Police did not specifically name Mace in the statement, but said a deputy with the lawmaker's office reported an incident inside the Rayburn House office building just before 6 p.m.

“Officers from the House Division and Threat Assessment Unit pursued the suspect,” police said in a statement.

The suspect was identified as 33-year-old James McIntyre of Illinois. He is charged with assaulting a government official.

Police noted that the Rayburn building was open to the public at the time of the incident and that McIntyre underwent security screening before entering the Capitol.

Mace, who is at the center of controversy after introducing a bill that would ban transgender women from using women's restrooms in the U.S. Capitol, shared the news on X.

She has received harsh criticism from LGBTQ advocates for the bill, and said in her post that she is still fighting it. Mace claimed that he introduced this law to ensure the safety of women.

“All the violence and intimidation continues to prove our point: women should be safe,” she said. “Your threats will not stop me from fighting for women!”
