Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) was attacked at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday night by an alleged LGBTQ activist.
The alleged assault reportedly occurred Tuesday evening inside the Leyburn House office building in Parliament House around 6 p.m. Fox5DC:
House Division officers and Threat Assessment Section officers were able to quickly locate the suspect, identified as James McIntyre, 33, of Illinois.
After investigation, McIntyre was arrested and charged with assault on a government official.
In a post on X, Nancy Mace characterized the man as an LGBTQ activist.
“Tonight, I was physically assaulted by a supporter at the Capitol. A new wrist brace and some ice in my arm will make it go away. Capitol Police have arrested the man. Your violence and threats against my life only make me double down on FAFO,” she said while calling on people to “hold the line.”
Mace became a lightning rod for controversy when he introduced a bill aimed at forcing U.S. members of Congress to use restrooms that correspond to their biological sex. The bill is seen as a response to incoming Congresswoman Sarah McBride (D-Delaware), who will be the first transgender member of Congress.
Since she announced the bill, LGBTQ activists have repeatedly harassed Mace, leaving signs and stickers in her office.
