Mysterious drones over New Jersey are a threat, ‘possibly’ launched from Iranian ‘mothership,’ congressman says

A Republican lawmaker has sounded the alarm about a mysterious drone spotted over New Jersey, claiming it may have been launched from an Iranian “mother ship.”

New Jersey Republican Congressman Jeff Van Drew made the comments Wednesday on Fox News during a conversation with host Harris Faulkner. He said he gathered information from sources as a member of the Transportation Committee and Aviation Subcommittee.

“Whether it's Iran, and I think it's very likely, Iran should be shot down.”

“I'm going to tell you the truth from a very high source, a very qualified source, a very responsible source,” Van Drew said.

“Iran probably launched a mothership with these drones on it about a month ago. That mothership is off the east coast of the United States. They launched the drones. [from] All we can see and hear,” he said, adding, “I don't say this lightly.”

At least 11 drone sightings made There is also an alleged drone cluster near Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey. Some estimate the drone was about the size of an SUV. Videos on social media showed drones swarming the night sky.

“Mr. Van Drew has ruled out the possibility that the drones are from the U.S. military, and if they are from a foreign country or are the work of highly sophisticated amateurs, then the unmanned “The plane should be shot down,” he continued.

“Know that Iran has an agreement with China to buy drones, motherships, technology to move forward,” Van Drew explained. “These drones, whether by some crazy hobbyist we can't imagine, or by Iran, should be shot down, and I think it's likely that they will be shot down. We don't have complete agreement.”

He added that the military was on alert for the incident.

Van Drew had Previously compared the drone threat to the infamous Chinese spy balloon incident in 2023.

“First, a Chinese reconnaissance balloon drifted in US airspace for a week,” he said on social media. “Unidentified drones are currently flying over New Jersey, avoiding radar detection. Our airspace is being exploited, putting the safety of the American people at risk.”

On Tuesday, Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri gave an opinion The military has not been upfront about what the drone actually is.

“If our government really doesn't know what these giant drones are in the skies over New Jersey and our military bases, then they're even more incompetent than we think they are. “It's time for them to come to terms with us about what's going on,” he wrote.
