Juan Soto reveals why he chose Mets in first comments after rejecting Yankees

Juan Soto liked the view across town.

At Thursday's press conference, Soto explained why he decided to leave the Yankees for the Mets this offseason.

“The Mets are a great organization, and what they've done over the last few games is one of the most important things, showing their ability to grow a team and grow a dynasty,” Soto said. “What I saw from the other side was incredible. The future of this team has a lot to do with my decision.”

During his introductory press conference Thursday at Citi Field, Soto revealed why he signed a historic 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets.

The 26-year-old slugger's decision will have ripples throughout the sports world for years to come, but especially in Queens and the Bronx.

The Yankees and Mets were joined by the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Dodgers in a head-to-head battle over the outfielder's services for the next decade and a half.

The Mets ultimately beat the Yankees' offer with a 15-year contract worth up to $805 million with an escalator and even more value with incentives.

He also offered a signing bonus of $75 million.

Soto can opt out after five seasons, but the Mets would need to add $4 million in each of the remaining 10 years to keep him in Flushing for the remainder of his contract.

The Yankees offered him a total of $760 million over 2016, with a signing bonus of $60 million.

Therefore, the Mets' offer had a higher total value both before and after potential escalators and incentives, a larger signing bonus, and a larger annual average value.

“Juan will be very happy with the Mets,” Mets owner Steve Cohen told the Post.

Cohen also sweetened the deal by providing a suite for every home game, a perk the Yankees would not offer because it would violate precedent.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman doesn't think the suite played a role in Soto's decision.

Soto was also unhappy with overzealous security guards who restricted his entourage to certain areas during his tenure, but the Post reported that the Yankees apologized and Soto forgave them.

“I don’t think Sweet is the possession arrow one way or the other,” Cashman said Wednesday. “It’s different when you’re making that kind of money.”

Soto will make his debut at Citi Field on April 4, 2025 against the Blue Jays, and his team debut will be in the team's season opener on March 27 in Houston, similar to his debut with the Yankees.
