Patrick Mahomes’ high ankle sprain could be scary, explained by a physical therapist

Chiefs fans are holding their breath in Kansas City as they wait to see how injured Patrick Mahomes will perform after the game. browns on sunday. After the game, the league announced that Mahomes suffered a “severe ankle sprain” and would be evaluated “on a week-to-week basis.”

The injury occurred on this play, when the quarterback was turned over after being brought down by two defenders.

The term “high ankle sprain” is often used in the soccer world, and it is a fairly common injury. But for all the talk about the injury, it's hard to understand how a high ankle sprain is functionally different from a regular ankle sprain, why it's more severe, and, in Mahomes' case, how it affects his movement and ability to play. There's not much explanation about how to limit it. Closer to the playoffs.

I spoke with Easton Osborn PT, DPT, CLT, CES. They are physical therapists with many years of experience in diagnosing and treating a variety of injuries in athletes and the general public. He explained why high ankle sprains are such a problem for athletes like Patrick Mahomes and what to expect going forward.

“Ankle rotation usually refers to the ligaments between the foot and lower leg, but high ankle sprains involve the ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula.

Ligaments are intended to provide stability during extreme movements, but they do not have the ability to contract like muscles. This means that if the tissue is overstretched, blood flow is reduced and the tissue's ability to rebuild is reduced.

High ankle injuries are often exacerbated by the fact that we rely on these structures to provide support and stability during normal walking and weight-bearing, not to mention scrambling movements as a quarterback. That's what I'm doing. Depending on the extent of the stretch and injury caused to the ankle, it may take several weeks or even months.

In either case, his medical team will likely need to provide additional support to the ankle, as the connective tissue will no longer be able to function optimally, increasing the risk of another injury in the future. ”

So there are essentially two big problems.

  1. The high ankle sprain Mahomes sustained in Plant's foot will make it fundamentally difficult to throw the ball and avoid pressure in the pocket.
  2. This is currently third Mahomes also suffered this type of injury to the same foot.

There is little doubt that the Chiefs have a great team around Mahomes, and ensuring his health is a top concern, but there are still many concerns regarding the Chiefs QB and this particular injury. there is. Not only now, but also in the future.
