U.S. Deports Gulf Cartel Supreme Leader-Los Zetas Founder; Faces Charges in Mexico

Federal authorities in the United States have deported the Gulf Cartel's top leader and founder of Los Zetas. The former kingpin completed his sentence in the United States. He is currently being held in a Mexican prison and is scheduled to stand trial on several drug trafficking, murder, weapons, and organized crime charges in Mexico.

On Monday afternoon, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and agents deported Osiel Cárdenas Guillen, the notorious former leader of the Gulf Cartel. The removal operation took place at the San Diego port of entry, where U.S. personnel walked Cárdenas toward Mexican authorities. Mexican police detained him on the Mexican side of the border.

Mexico's Attorney General's Office said in a prepared statement that Cárdenas will be sent to Altiplano Prison to face various charges, including drug trafficking and money laundering.

As Breitbart Texas reported, Cárdenas became a highly feared figure across Mexico after taking command of the Gulf Cartel in the late 1990s and taking his own life to rise to power. Soon after, he consolidated his power by recruiting former soldiers and police officers to serve as his bodyguards and assassination squad. The group grew in power and became known as Los Zetas.

The U.S. Department of Justice indicted Cárdenas on drug trafficking charges in 2000, but it was not until 2003 that Mexican troops arrested Cárdenas after a fierce gunfight in Matamoros.

In 2007, the U.S. Department of Justice extradited Cárdenas from the Southern District of Texas to stand trial on numerous drug trafficking and money laundering charges. Three years later, Cárdenas pleaded guilty to several charges as part of a secret deal and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He served most of his sentence before being deported.

According to ICE Enforcement and Deportation Operations, agents arrested Cárdenas on August 5 because he had completed his sentence and was facing imminent deportation, and because Mexico had requested extradition to face charges in Mexico. Detained. Cárdenas' release from a U.S. prison facility in Terre Haute, Indiana, has sparked widespread speculation within Mexico, with some media outlets on both sides of the border reporting that Cárdenas' release from prison and his eventual return to power in Mexico has led to widespread speculation in Mexico. They published an incorrect article about what was supposed to happen. . From August to December, Cárdenas was detained by ICE-ERO, awaiting extradition to Mexico.
