On Wednesday, the Coweta County Sheriff's Office and Georgia State Patrol announced they were searching for an “armed and dangerous” suspect who led police on a chase and fled the scene after the shooting.
They did not specify what clothing he was wearing or any other identifying physical characteristics.
The pursuit ended near South Highway 29 and Calico Loop near Grantville, authorities said. The suspect, who was in possession of an AR-15 assault rifle, exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
Georgia State Patrol reported that a K9 officer was injured in the back-and-forth gunfire. The dog is currently undergoing surgery after being airlifted to hospital.
The unidentified person is believed to be “armed and dangerous,” according to the sheriff's office, and police are advising the public to stay indoors or leave the area if possible during the lockdown. I am doing it.
“Anyone in the area is asked to go inside, lock their doors, and report any suspicious activity,” the sheriff's office said in a warning to the community.
The students at Granton Elementary School, three miles from the shooting scene, were released safely to their parents after their release was initially delayed.
