A 40-year-old man has pleaded guilty to stalking for harassing college basketball player Paige Backers.
Backers, a 23-year-old security guard at the University of Connecticut, reportedly received a series of videos via Instagram from Robert Cole Parmalee in early February.
According to ESPNParmalee told UConn in an email that she was a member of the royal family who wanted to marry a player on the women's basketball team.
“I'm going to take all of you with me.” [op]Please strike a pose. ”
Parmalee also reportedly posted photos, videos and comments about Bookers online on platforms such as TikTok, including:
“If I can't live with the woman of my choice, [Bueckers]then I choose to die, and I choose to take you all with me [op]Pose to me, turn against us, go to hell and back, king. ”
Associated Press reported Parmalee's social media posts included dozens of references to the basketball player, including posting a fake wedding invitation and multiple photos of herself wearing what appeared to be a diamond engagement ring. . Other posts allegedly threatened Bakkers' friends and family.
Parmalee also said on social media that he planned to travel to the East Coast to propose to Bakkers and get her expelled from the university.
The suspect apparently tried to give chase and was arrested in August while walking on a highway near Bradley International Airport near Hartford. He was taken into custody with his ring and lingerie and told state troopers he was on his way to meet the Buckers at the university.
With his last known addresses in Grants Pass, Oregon, and Ritzville, Washington, it appeared that Parmalee had actually flown in from the Northwest to confront the young athlete. Parmalee was originally charged with stalking, breach of peace and harassment, but has now pleaded guilty to second-degree stalking.
