Republican lawmakers say they have reached a new spending agreement.
Donald Trump and Elon Musk are expected to support the deal.
Two Republican senators met Thursday afternoon in Speaker Mike Johnson's office, saying they had reached an agreement on short-term government spending fixes and a possible increase in the debt ceiling.
“There's a deal,” said Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.). Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) acknowledged there was agreement among Republicans, but the news surprised House Democrats.
The plan, which Johnson is expected to introduce in the House of Commons later on Thursday, includes a stopgap measure to fund the government until mid-March, an extension of the Clean Farms Bill, and an extension of the previously negotiated Clean Farms Bill, according to three Republican MPs familiar with the deal. This includes a $110 billion disaster relief package. A new deadline has been set for January 2027 by Democrats, an extension of clean health care, and a two-year suspension of the debt ceiling.
Bice said Johnson's plan to pass the more than 1,500-page catch-all bill he negotiated with Democratic leaders earlier this week to avert a government shutdown and provide more than $100 payments to Donald Trump and He said he expected him to support the deal after it stalled due to Elon Musk. Spend billions of dollars on disaster relief and enact a host of unrelated policy priorities.
“The president was instrumental in brokering a deal,” said Republican Rep. Anna Paulina Luna.
