Cody Bellinger open to playing any position with Yankees after trade

Cody Bellinger will do anything to help the Yankees.

The newly acquired slugger said during his induction press conference Thursday that he is willing to play all over the field if coach Aaron Boone needs him.

“I said [Boone]Where you guys need me to play, I’ll play,” Bellinger said. “Whether you're a leftist or a centrist, [Aaron] Judge got a DH day, I'll play right. Or if they need me at first base, I'll play first. It helps my team win and I enjoy it. ”

Bellinger, who was traded to the Yankees along with cash from the Cubs for right-hander Cody Poteet on Tuesday, has played all three outfield positions and first base during his eight-year MLB career.

During his first two seasons with the Dodgers in 2017 and 2018, Bellinger spent most of his time at first base, before moving to right field in 2019.

That year, Bellinger won the National League MVP and Gold Glove Award as a right fielder.

During his time with Chicago in 2024, Bellinger alternated between center field and right field, with some time as a first baseman.

If Bellinger becomes the Bronx Bombers' starting center fielder, Judge will likely shift to right field.

Bellinger could also play left field if Jason Dominguez takes over at center.

Bellinger could become the first baseman if the Yankees don't add another first baseman, but general manager Brian Cashman said Wednesday that the team is still on the free agent market, including first baseman Pete Alonso. He suggested that he was participating in.

And, as Bellinger suggested, he could always move around the field as needed.

“I learned a lot from Quique Hernandez,” Bellinger said during a Zoom meeting. “He's probably one of the best players I've ever seen, able to roam the field and perform above average or well in any position.

“I saw how that was possible and I knew I had the ability to do it. I like to work on it and lighten my footwork and prepare like that. I’m available wherever you need me.”
