The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday imposed further restrictions on drone flights across the Northeast after sightings have increased in recent weeks.

A day after announcing temporary restrictions on most drone flights in New Jersey, the FAA announced: 27 No Fly Zone Notice Friday in New York for “special security reasons.”

The restrictions will last until January 18, 2025, and apply to some of the Empire State's most populous areas, including nearly every borough in New York City.

There are some exceptions to this restriction, such as when drones are used in support of national defense, homeland security, law enforcement, fire and rescue services, or disaster response.

Commercial drones can be used within restricted airspace with a valid statement of work.

According to the department, those who meet the aforementioned categories must also receive an approved special government interest exemption. This is an emergency permit from the FAA that allows aircraft to operate in restricted airspace for specific purposes.

All other federal aviation regulations must also be followed.

Government agencies say joint investigation of drone sightings shows no threat: 'We are aware of the concerns'

An ongoing joint investigation by the FBI, FAA, Department of Homeland Security, and Department of Defense has yielded nearly 5,000 reports of suspected drone sightings in the “past few weeks,” but only 100 have resulted in leads. It was revealed that only.

The agency announced Monday that its review so far has found no risks, but told Congress it will “expand and expand existing counter-drone authorities to identify and mitigate any threats that may emerge.” He called for the enactment of the bill.
