Former NBA coach says female USC star could play against men: ‘She looks to have the size’

Two-time NBA Coach of the Year George Karl said NCAA women's basketball player JuJu Watkins has a chance to play against men in the NBA.

Watkins, a sophomore player at the University of Southern California, is 6 feet, 2 inches tall, several inches taller than NCAA record holder Caitlin Clark.

Coach Carl said Watkins' size makes him believe she has what it takes to play against the boys.

“She seems to have the size, athleticism, and talent to even compete in the NBA at some level!” Karl wrote ×.

It didn't take long for readers to begin to question Carl's credibility.

One reader said, “Why would you say something like this? She can't even compete with the men's USC team and they suck.” answered.

“Why would you lose your faith?”

another reader scoffed at KarlHe asked if he was crazy, but admitted he might compete for a “bench spot” in the G League, the NBA's developmental league.

Blaze News' TJ Moe also got in on the action, asking the 73-year-old man: “Why would you say something like this to lose credibility?”

“You can say she's a great girls' basketball player, and that's a fair assessment. There's no way she'd do well against a good high school boys team. Why undermine your credibility?” he reaffirmed.

Karl maintains Watkins can play against men, but also said he thinks she might be better than Clark, currently the WNBA's top star.

“Caitlin Clark is good, but I think JuJu Watkins is even better,” Karl wrote.

Watkins is only in his second year of college, so there aren't any stats that can be directly compared to Clark.

However, in Watkins' first season, she scored a total of 920 points, which exceeded both Clark's first two seasons' totals of 799 and 863 points.

Watkins is on pace to score 840 points in his second season, but is averaging just 24.7 points per game, down nearly three points from his first year (27.1 points).

Watkins had an impressive first year, but will need to continue to improve if he is to beat Clark. Iowa players averaged more points per game each time they played.

Clark also averaged an impressive 28.4 points per game in college, an NCAA record.

Clark holds several other records for NCAA career totals. These include total field goals (1,293), total 3-pointers made (548), total 3-pointers attempted (1,452), and total points scored (3,951).
