US Central Command said its forces carried out an airstrike on Thursday that killed ISIS leader Abu Yousif in Syria's eastern Deir Ezzor province.

Another ISIS operative was also killed in the strike, U.S. officials said.

“As mentioned above, the United States is working with our allies and partners in the region and will not allow ISIS to take advantage of the current situation in Syria and regroup. ISIS intends to break free from captivity for the more than 8,000 ISIS operatives currently held in Syrian facilities, including those seeking to conduct operations outside Syria. We will aggressively target individuals and operatives,” said CENTCOM Commander Gen. Michael Eric Kurilla.

“ISIS has the intention of breaking the captivity of the more than 8,000 ISIS operatives currently held in Syrian facilities,” he continued. “We will aggressively target these leaders and operatives, including those seeking to conduct operations outside Syria.”

The report of Yousif's removal comes days after the United States eliminated 12 other ISIS terrorists in Syria in precision strikes, which CENTCOM said were designed to “disrupt, degrade, and defeat ISIS. “The aim is to prevent terrorist organizations from carrying out foreign activities and destroy ISIS.” This is to prevent ISIS from seeking an opportunity to regroup in central Syria. ”

Earlier this month, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown by Syrian rebels after 24 years in office.

Additionally, the announcement of the attack came a day after the United States announced it had doubled the number of troops it has in Syria this year as part of the fight against ISIS.
