The government funding deadline arrived early Saturday just as Congress passed a tentative plan to prevent a government shutdown after days and nights of chaos in Washington.
President Biden is expected to sign the funding bill on Saturday.
The chaos at the Capitol this week, marking the end of the 118th Congress, offers a glimpse into the uphill battles that will face the 119th Congress, where Republicans have an even slimmer House majority.
The spending deal comes just a month before President-elect Trump returns to the White House with an ambitious agenda that may be harder to implement than expected.
The Senate also approved changes to Social Security law in the early hours that would increase benefits for 2 million retired public servants. He also approved a bill to transfer the RFK Stadium site to the District of Columbia.
The debt ceiling increase, which President Trump had called for as part of a continuing resolution to extend government funding through March 14, was not adopted Friday, but lawmakers are leaving Washington and looking to the next Congress. It is certainly a matter of interest.
