Independent Wrestling Event in Poughkeepsie Draws Crowds but Ends in Chaos
The thought of attending an independent wrestling show often brings to mind visuals of nearly empty venues, where hopeful wrestlers are striving for recognition. However, this past Saturday, Awesome Championship Wrestling (ACW) proved those stereotypes might be overly simplistic when it hosted Reckoning in Poughkeepsie, New York. The MJN Center was packed, and the event even aired on Triller, showcasing multiple matches complete with fireworks, impressive production, and a climactic steel cage match.
Yet, the event did conclude in a cloud of confusion and controversy.
In a highly anticipated match, Vic Dalicius and Hale Collins, known as The Now, defended their ACW Tag Team Championship against the duo Saint Two Slaughter, which consists of Sean Donovan and Danny Maff. This match was a culmination of a long-standing feud, where the tension had escalated to the point of Donovan and Muff sabotaging Dalicious’s wedding and Collins’ wrestling school ceremony. Locked inside the cage, the competitors fought hard.
The match was intense, with both Collins and Muff seemingly on the verge of winning as they reached for the cage door. The rules stated that the first to escape would claim victory. But both reached the ground simultaneously, leading to an apparent draw. This situation frustrated the referees and ignited anger from Saint Two Slaughter.
Frustration boiled over, prompting them to confront ACW officials. In a surprising twist, Saint Two Slaughter’s manager entered the ring and locked the cage shut. Collins, already out of the fray, was restrained outside, witnessing his partner fall victim to a brutal ending against Saint Two Slaughter, involving chair shots and a spiked piledriver.
During the ensuing chaos, Dalicious’s wife made a dramatic entrance, banging on the cage in an effort to rescue him. Eventually, they managed to pry the cage open, but she fell on Dalicious, who had already sustained serious injuries. The post-match reaction from fans was one of shock, leading to water bottles being thrown at the departing wrestlers.
Dalicious later shared grim details of his injuries on Instagram, where he expressed his gratitude for the support he received from friends and fans in light of what had transpired, as he faced an uncertain recovery.
As for the other matches throughout the night, here are some highlights:
- Leo Sparrow retained the ACW Cruiserweight Championship against GKM and Riamo.
- Flip Gordon prevailed over Matt Taven, Mance Warner, Brian Cage, and Hammerstone to become the No. 1 contender for the ACW National Championship.
- Zach Clayton successfully defended his ACW National Championship against Dante Casanova.
- Andrade El Idro also retained his title against Richard Holliday.
The evening featured the likes of Randy Savage and Mike Bell being honored at the MJN Center Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame. Killer Kross and Shotzi are set to perform at ACW’s next event scheduled for July 18, named Independence Day.
Reflections from Sami Zayn
In another corner of the wrestling scene, Sami Zayn has been feeling the weight of setbacks, having recently lost the United States Title to Trick Williams. Zayn has been vocal about his frustrations with the current wrestling landscape. It’s almost like, things just don’t feel the same anymore.
Zayn reminisced about times when dedication truly paid off in wrestling. He questioned whether fans still resonated with true talent or if the industry had shifted too far for his liking.
This complex mix of nostalgia and frustration is not just Zayn’s alone; many fans can relate to these sentiments as they watch the evolving dynamics in professional wrestling unfold.
As Zayn continues to navigate these turbulent waters, the wrestling community waits eagerly to see how his journey unfolds. Time will tell if he can reclaim his place in the spotlight.
