The same post also said that Drew Johnson was captured in an area near the prison.
Johnson was sentenced to life in prison on Valentine's Day 2022 and escaped from Mississippi's newest state prison in Greene County on Christmas Eve, nearly three years later, according to the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Magnolia State authorities described Johnson as “desperate” and “extremely dangerous.”
“Call your family to warn them. Text them and get a response,” the George County Sheriff's Department warned of the jailbreak in a Facebook post. “People tend to be more lenient and let their guard down over Christmas. Be vigilant and be careful.”
The captured killer has a heinous criminal history that spans multiple states. He pleaded guilty in 2022 to a series of unrelated violent crimes, according to a news release from the Shelby, Tennessee, District Attorney's Office. In 2016, Johnson fatally stabbed an acquaintance more than 20 times before abandoning the victim's body in a field in southwest Memphis.
While incarcerated in 2021, Johnson attacked another inmate, hitting him repeatedly in the head with a brick, according to the District Attorney's Office. The convicted murderer also pleaded guilty to setting multiple arson fires in 2019.
As a result, Johnson was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder charge, and will be sentenced to concurrent 15-year sentences for each of the other violent crimes, according to the Shelby County District Attorney's Office.
Additionally, he has a pending murder case in Rankin County, Mississippi.
According to a Greene County Emergency Management Agency alert, Johnson escaped from the South Mississippi Correctional Facility in Leakesville around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
