The Mexican government has announced a new program to provide emergency legal and consular assistance to immigrants in the United States. The move comes as Mexico prepares for an expected wave of mass deportations from the administration of President-elect Donald J. Trump.
At a press conference hosted by Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday morning, Mexico's Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente announced that his country's staff are working with PALE (Program of Foreign Legal Advisors), which includes an array of lawyers and law firms. ) announced that it is introducing a new program called. , and U.S. advisors have volunteered to assist consular officials and immigrants if they encounter problems with their country's immigration authorities. The presentation also announced the development of an application that acts as a panic button that individuals can press to access consular staff or legal assistance.
The program has a call center where Mexicans living in the United States can call and immediately be connected to the nearest consulate for legal assistance.
“It takes a judicial order to remove someone from the United States,” de la Fuente said. “A final sentence of deportation or deportation, in legal terms, needed to be rendered.”
The diplomat said that after the order is filed, the migrants must be detained and appear before a judge for various hearings.
“For a deportation to take place, there has to be an order from a judge indicating that, and we're going to be very vigilant to make sure that due process is followed,” he said. .
De la Fuente said each of the 53 consulates in the United States will develop local action plans to assist Mexican nationals. The consulates will also collaborate with various NGOs, churches, and universities to provide additional support to immigrants facing immigration challenges.
