$19K Raised for Family Who Lost Home to Fire on Christmas

A family in Chippewa County, Michigan, devastated by a house fire on Christmas Day is receiving much-needed support from their neighbors.

The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a home on Johnson Road in Rudyard, and emergency crews found the building fully engulfed in flames (Mid-Michigan) reported on Thursday.

A family of six was wondering what to do after learning the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office said their home appeared to be a total loss.

However, volunteers from the county's Victim Services Unit (VSU) responded to help them, along with other area residents.

In a social media post Wednesday, the sheriff's office said share “I would like to personally thank the VSU supporters at the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office who responded today,” the statement read.

“Especially at Christmas, we need special people who volunteer their time to help those in need. Our VSU was called out to assist a family of six who lost their home in the fire. I did. Gob. [sic] Blessings to you all,” it read.

Thank you very much. I would like to personally thank the VSU advocates at the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office for their response.

A woman named Christine McCartchy, who is believed to be a member of the family, said In a Facebook post, he said his daughter Kayla was the one who lost her home in the fire.

She added that the house was built by Kayla's father for his children before he passed away.

“Miraculously, Kayla and her children, Estella (age 5), Jeremy (age 4), Everett (age 2), and baby Jasper (age 1 month) all escaped safely after waking up from a nap. Thankfully, their two dogs also made it out unharmed,” McCarty said. She also thanked everyone who offered support and said her family would be staying with her for the time being.

“Right now, we are still in shock and processing everything, but we are deeply grateful that everyone is safe, including the dog. It truly is a miracle,” she wrote. A photo in her post shows firefighters at the scene.

This afternoon, my daughter Kayla lost the home that her father, Judd, spent years building in a devastating fire.

McCarty is next share A list of items the family needed said: “Any donations would be greatly appreciated!”

As of Saturday afternoon, the GoFundMe tidy raised $19,050 to help the family recover.

“We are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our family, friends and community during this devastating time,” she wrote on the fundraising page.

“We know they have a long road ahead of them, but with your help, Kayla, Jeremy, and their children will be able to take the first steps toward healing and rebuilding their lives.” Ms. McCartchy added.
