On Friday, New York Times columnist David Brooks, who appears weekly on PBS's “NewsHour,” argued that the decline in political news viewership is a positive.
Brooks told host Lisa Desjardins that the country is “overly politicized.” He said many have argued that the term 2024 has been “used up” due to political cycles, but Trump's victory on November 5, the failure of European socialism, and the victory of Israel. He said he thought the word 2024 should be “punished,” citing
“I have to say I’m excited about the decline in political news viewership,” Brooks said. “This country is overly politicized. People get into politics for a sense of belonging, for a sense of justice. You should go to your friends for that kind of thing. You've got more than politics can handle. That's what we're looking for in politics.”
“My words this year are chastened. For those of us who oppose Donald Trump, we should be chastened because the American people often think we are in the wrong. If you are a member of the European community If you worship the welfare model, it's broken. If you hate Bibi Netanyahu, you should be punished a little bit, because he brought down Hamas, Hezbollah, and Assad. There are many reasons to be humble.”
