Schatz mentioned the term “LatinX,” but said polls show a majority of Latinos don't think many members of Congress use the term.

“I think Kamala has done a really good job of focusing on the concerns of the middle class. But I remember her saying, 'I'm going to center the needs of the working class.' 'And I thought to myself, I don't know anyone in the world who says I'm centered, I know people in academia, but I'm centered around my needs. I know someone who says that. That space, or all of it, is a clear sign that you are not normal,” he added.

“And in addition to being careful not to say anything that sounds terribly weird, it's how we interact with advocacy groups,” Schatz continued.

“I remember saying I was in favor of a cessation of hostilities in Israel and Palestine,” he said, citing further examples he had used.

Schatz added: “People said, why don't you say a ceasefire? I think it's literally the same thing.”

“And this idea that there are magic words that we have to say, by essentially saying what a lot of activists want us to say, rather than actually taking action, has led to progressivism and political politics. “For those who think what we're doing is performative, and that's exactly why this magic word should be abolished,” he continued.
