President Joe Biden on Sunday called Jimmy Carter an “extraordinary leader, statesman and humanitarian” as he joined the chorus of mourners following the 39th president's death.
“With compassion and moral clarity, he eradicated disease, built peace, promoted civil and human rights, promoted free and fair elections, sheltered the homeless, and always supported the most vulnerable among us. I worked to advocate for people,” Biden wrote. “He saved, uplifted and changed lives all over the world. He was a man of great character and courage, hope and optimism. We love to see him and Rosalyn together. I always look forward to it.
“The love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership, and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism.” said the president.
Carter, 100, died Sunday after nearly two years in hospice care in her hometown of Plains, Georgia.
Mr. Biden announced that he would order a state funeral for Mr. Carter to be held in Washington, D.C., for the former president, the governor of Georgia, and a U.S. Navy veteran.
“I want to thank the entire Carter family for sharing these things with America and the world,” the president said. “To their staff, from our earliest days to our last, we have no doubt that you will continue to do a good job of continuing their legacy.”
