Louisiana hunter cited for violations after shooting man he mistook for a deer

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is reiterating the importance of hunting safety after a man was shot and killed by a hunter who mistook him for a deer.

The department announced on Facebook on Dec. 23 that law enforcement responded to a shooting incident involving two hunters on a property in Zachary, a city in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Two hunters were unknowingly hunting deer on “the same small private property” when one of them mistook the other for a deer and accidentally shot him.

Officials said the two men had permission to enter the premises. local media.

According to the agency, the man was struck by bullets from a 20-gauge shotgun. The shooter realized he had shot a human and not a deer and immediately called 911 for help.

Hunter was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge with non-life-threatening injuries. Law enforcement has not said where the man was shot.

When police investigated what happened, they found that the hunter was not wearing orange clothing or had a deer tag. The shooter was charged with both violations.

LDWF said additional charges are possible as the investigation continues.

The agency reminded all hunters to prioritize safety by wearing orange at all times, as required by law, and actively identifying the target and surroundings before firing a weapon.
