‘A debt of gratitude’: Trump delivers heartfelt remarks remembering Jimmy Carter

President-elect Donald Trump issued a heartfelt statement following the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Sunday.

Mr. Carter passed away on December 29, 2024, at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. Carter served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981 and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. At 100 years old, Carter lived longer than any president in American history and had the longest post-presidential retirement at 43 years.

“The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a critical time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans.”

“My father was a hero, not just to me, but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and selfless love,” said Chip Carter, the former president's son. said in a statement Sunday.

“My brother, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs,” Chip continued, “because of the way he brought people together. The world is our family, and we thank you for continuing to honor his memory by living these shared beliefs. ”

Many Americans, including the president-elect, are putting aside their political differences to honor Mr. Carter. In a statement released after Carter's death, Trump expressed his condolences to his family and reflected warmly on former President Carter.

President Trump: “I just heard the news of President Jimmy Carter's death.'' said in a statement on Sunday. “Those of us who have been fortunate enough to serve as president understand that this is a very special club, and we are the only ones who can relate to the great responsibility of leading the greatest country in history.”

“The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a critical time for our country, and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans,” Trump continued. “We all owe him a debt of gratitude for that.”

Over the past few years, Carter has been hospitalized several times, and finally decided in February 2023 to continue receiving hospice care at home. In response to President Joe Biden's death, he announced January 9th as a national day of mourning.

“Melania and I have our hearts out for the Carter family and their loved ones during this difficult time,” Trump said. “We ask everyone to keep this in mind and in your prayers.”
