President-elect Donald Trump on Monday formally endorsed Mike Johnson for a second term as Speaker of the House.
After the tumultuous spending battles at the end of the 118th Congress, several Republican members of Congress expressed their dissatisfaction with Johnson's chairmanship, which called into question. Republicans will enter the 119th Congress with an even slimmer majority than before, so even just a few defections could delay or destroy Johnson's chances.
“Mike Johnson is the next Paul Ryan,” Massey said. “On January 3, 2025, I will not vote for Mike Johnson. I hope my colleagues will join me, because history will never give America a 'do-over' again.” ”
Many in the Republican conference remain dissatisfied with Johnson's response to the last-minute continuing resolution, but President Trump's 11th-hour support could be the boost he needs to remain speaker.
President Trump: “The American people need immediate relief from all the destructive policies of the previous administration.'' said In a Truth social post on Monday. “Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard-working, godly man. He will do the right thing and we will continue to win. Mike has my full and complete support. MAGA !!!”
“Thank you, President Trump!” Johnson said In response to President Trump's support. “As always, we are honored and humbled by your support. Together, we will quickly realize your America First agenda and usher in a new golden age for America. The American people demand and deserve that we don't waste our time. Let's get to work! “
Even though Johnson has President Trump's support, he can still lose just one Republican vote in the next Congress. As of this writing, only one Republican has publicly said he will not vote for Johnson.
“On January 3, 2017, Paul Ryan was elected Speaker of the House by every Republican except me,” said Republican Representative Thomas Massie (Kentucky). said “Ryan continued to propose a bogus repeal of Obamacare, increased spending, supported the deep state, and defunded wall construction. Two years later, we lost our majority and the Democratic Party is a living hell for Trump.” It became.” ”
“Mike Johnson is the next Paul Ryan,” Massey said. “On January 3, 2025, I will not vote for Mike Johnson. I hope my colleagues will join me because history will never give America a 'do-over' again.”
While Massey has been vocal in his opposition to Johnson, Texas Republican Congressman Chip Roy reportedly It is exploring other options days before Friday's floor vote.
Roy is a former candidate for speaker, Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, who was popular among House conservatives. Jordan made his bid for the gavel after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted in October 2023, but ultimately fell about 20 votes short.
Mr. Johnson has struggled during his speech, but Mr. Trump's support is likely to improve his chances of re-election on Friday.
