Tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski reveals she played in Wimbledon, Olympics while battling breast cancer

Canadian tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski revealed in a social media post that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2024.

Dombrowski, 32, said she delayed some of her treatment a bit in order to complete it at Wimbledon and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“In the spring of 2023, I felt a lump in my left breast during a self-examination. A few months later, the doctor said there was nothing and there was no need to worry. So I did nothing. Time has passed and it's spring. In 2024, I thought the lump would be a little bigger,” Dombrowski wrote on Instagram.

“During WTA’s comprehensive physical exam, the WTA doctor told me to go and get a scan because I didn’t know what it was… I got a call from the radiologist who was reading the images and said it looked like a lump. “It looks ugly, so get a biopsy right away.”

“The next morning, I went to Advent Health Hospital in Wesley Chapel and had a biopsy of my left breast. The preliminary results came back the same day: Cancer. This was a word I never expected. And in an instant, your life and livelihood can be ruined.'' A loved one is turned upside down. ”

Dombrowski said she decided to share her story now because for a long time she “wasn't ready to expose myself to the attention and questions that I might have received before.”

The star tennis player wanted to “get everything figured out and deal with things privately.”

“After two surgeries, recovery and rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, @patrickdaciek (this was 2 weeks before Nottingham) throwing the ball because his left arm wasn’t quite raised enough, further treatment was needed. a bit I made it to Wimbledon and the Olympics, started radiation + fatigue (between Toronto and the US Open), and started endocrine therapy, finished the season in the best possible shape… everything. Despite battling breast cancer, Dombrowski achieved much success, including competing in Wimbledon and the Olympics.

Dambrowski and doubles partner Erin Routliff lost in the Wimbledon final, but won a bronze medal in mixed doubles for Canada at the Paris Olympics.

“My intention in sharing some of my experiences is that when cancer is detected early, when we have access to highly skilled and dedicated physicians and other health care professionals, and when we receive appropriate care, Emphasizing that you can maintain your quality of life when you maintain your mental, physical, and spiritual health and surround yourself with people who truly understand you inside and out,” Dabrowski says. he wrote.

“When I was first diagnosed, I was worried that cancer would be a part of my identity forever. I don't feel that way now. I'm honored to call myself a survivor.”

Dabrowski said her diagnosis gave her the opportunity to view challenges through a different lens: the “lens of gratitude.”

She ended her post with, “To all the people with cancer, I want to say thank you, but thank you.”

Dombrowski won three doubles titles in 2024 and has won 17 doubles titles in his career.

Dombrovskis is also a three-time Olympian, competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
