What to know about the car-renting app used in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks

The car rental app Turo has been in the spotlight after the cars used in the New Year's Day attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas were rented through the company.

At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured when a pickup truck crashed into crowded Bourbon Street in New Orleans, and a Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing one person and killing seven others. A person was injured.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said the truck used in the explosion was rented through an app, but Touro confirmed to NewsNation that a host vehicle was involved in the New Orleans attack.

“We are heartbroken to learn that one of our host's vehicles was involved in this terrible incident. We are actively partnering with the FBI. At this time, due to this guest's history, We are not aware of anything that threatens our confidence or safety,” a Touro spokesperson told News Nation.

McMahill said authorities believe the two attacks are two separate incidents and claim the use of the app was “coincidental,” but that the investigation is still ongoing.

Turo's website describes it as a car rental marketplace where individuals can rent cars from “trusted hosts” in their area. The app claims to be the “world's largest car sharing marketplace.”

To make a reservation on Turo, you must present your driver's license, be at least 18 years old, and provide personal information to be approved by the app.

Cars are obtained through pickup or delivery, but some hosts provide remote access by storing the key in a lockbox or using an app.

“Entrepreneurs can take control of their future by becoming a host and building a car sharing business on Turo, leveraging an established platform to grow their business and achieve their goals,” the app says. states. “With Turo, everyone has the power to be in the driver’s seat.”

The Hill has reached out to Touro for comment.
