Americans optimistic about Trump’s ability to control immigration: Gallup

Americans are optimistic that President-elect Trump will be able to manage immigration, a new survey finds.

public opinion poll, Conducted by Gallupfound that 68% of U.S. adults expect President Trump to restrict illegal immigration.

Twenty-eight percent of respondents did not think Trump could control illegal immigration, and 4% had no opinion on the issue.

This is where survey respondents have the brightest outlook for President Trump's second term.

Of the 17 questions about President Trump's ability to accomplish various policy goals, eight questions garnered at least 50 percent confidence.

60% believe the next president will cut jobs and protect the United States from terrorism. Fifty-eight percent believe he will improve the economy, and 55% say he will keep the U.S. out of war.

The survey also found that a majority of Americans believe President Trump will lower taxes and lower crime rates, and half expect him to increase respect for the United States abroad.

Meanwhile, 33% of Americans say President Trump will mend political divisions in the country, and 41% say he will improve race relations.

Gallup pointed out that partisanship has a strong influence on how Americans feel about Trump becoming president-elect. Most Republicans are optimistic that he will accomplish each of his 17 goals, but Democrats are skeptical about nearly all of them.

More Americans believe President Trump's immigration plan will succeed than any other president in Gallup's history.

The survey was conducted among 1,003 adults from Dec. 2 to 18 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
