President-elect Donald Trump on Friday wished Speaker Mike Johnson “good luck” in his bid for re-election.
To secure a second term as speaker, Johnson needs to receive 218 of the 219 House Republicans, meaning he only received one Republican “no” vote. means not possible. The Republican Party operates within a historically slim majority, but several fiscally conservative Republicans are expected to pose obstacles to Mr. Johnson's bid to become speaker.
Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky has already pledged not to vote for Johnson. Other Republicans, including Chip Roy of Texas, Tim Burchett of Tennessee and Michael Cloud of Texas, remain undecided, with some asking the speaker for further commitments.
All 215 Democrats are expected to attend the vote, further narrowing Johnson's already narrow lead.

Mr. Trump formally endorsed Mr. Johnson on Monday following the funding failure in mid-December. Republican lawmakers, MAGA allies, and Trump himself were unhappy with Johnson's handling of the spending fight, but the president-elect ultimately supported Johnson's reelection.
