The CEO of a tech startup was left “literally shaking” when his self-driving Tesla veered onto the streetcar tracks in Santa Monica, just as the train began plowing into the EV, footage shows. shown.
Jesse Liu, who founded Rabbit, a hardware company that utilizes AI, said: Alarming video posted to X Thursday, claiming he had to run a red light to “save a life.”
“It's really crazy,” he said in the video as cars continued to pass on different station platforms.
“I have nowhere to go,” Liu continued in the video. The video has been viewed over 720,000 times.
“And I can see from behind…the train is right there,” his rear dash cam showed an oncoming train stopping about a block from his car.
It was the first time Mr Liu – who was left “literally shaking” – had a problem with his car's self-driving function.
“This time, I was really scared. It's crazy,” he said.
Liu said he was forced to turn off his car's “autopilot” and run a red light at the nearest intersection to stay out of the train's path.
“I'm just trying to share this video with Tesla and the team,” he said.
“This is a serious problem, and regardless of how a human might react, the autopilot algorithm should not let the vehicle enter the tracks. It's fundamentally wrong.”
Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.
