Kadary Richmond awakens to rally St. John’s to win over Butler

Was this the beginning of Cadderly Richmond?

It was a game St. John's couldn't afford to lose, and he took over until the end. He also made big plays defensively.

He finished the drive at the rim.

He was there for the Red Storm on a day when they once again fell behind from the 3-point line.

On Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena, Richmond had five points, two steals and one assist in the final 4 minutes and 48 seconds left, helping St. John's fight back from a seven-point deficit in the second half and defeat Butler by 70. Defeated with 62.

His steal and dish to RJ Lewis for a dunk gave St. John's the lead for good, and they scored the next four points to extend their advantage.

Despite making 1 of 21 3-point shots, St. John's recovered and finished with a 3-1 record in league play.

Lewis had 20 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Zuby Ejiofor with 14 points and eight rebounds, followed by Richmond with 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Pierre Brooks replaced Butler with 17 points.

It was a miserable first half offensively for St. John's.

At one point, he missed 17 of 18 shots, shooting an abysmal 29.7 percent on target.

The Johnnies were once again stagnant, not moving the ball and looking ice-cold from the field.

Richmond missed six of eight field goal attempts.

Ejiofor was scoreless.

The Johnnies missed 9-of-10 3-pointers and 3-of-21 on shots other than layups and dunks.

Butler was almost as bad, only trailing by four points in the first half.

The Bulldogs started 1-of-15 from the field, but missed 8-of-11 free throw attempts.

St. John's woke up after halftime.

They went on a 16-3 run to take a seven point lead.

The game sped up, helped by Press and Ejiofor scoring 10 points in the first 6 minutes and 30 seconds of Game 1.

But Butler fought back with an 11-2 outburst and Patrick McCaffrey hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Bulldogs the lead back with 10:11 remaining.
