Schumer calls on Thune for briefing on attacks in New Orleans, Las Vegas

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (New York) sent a letter He called on incoming Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune (S.D.) to brief the Senate on the New Year's Day attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas.

“As the Federal Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate the horrific attack that killed 14 innocent victims in New Orleans and the explosives attack in Las Vegas, all senators can be assured of action. I am writing to request that you convene a press conference as soon as possible.'' I've been informed,” Schumer began.

In his letter, Schumer argued that the Senate needed to be briefed on the scope of the attack, given its severity and the threat that “copycat attackers” may pose.

As the U.S. Capitol prepares to host President Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, Schumer asked the Senate about security measures being taken to protect lawmakers and the public during the high-profile event. He said he thought an explanation should be provided.

“In light of the New Year's Day attacks, we need to provide senators with a comprehensive briefing on the investigations in New Orleans and Las Vegas, as well as security plans for most upcoming public events at the Capitol. “I believe we were able to make informed decisions about security, emergency response, and support for the Capitol and affected communities,” Schumer wrote.

Schumer, who will no longer lead the Senate after Republicans take control, told Thune he was ready to work with him to facilitate a meeting at the earliest opportunity.

“Thank you for considering this important request,” Schumer concluded. “I look forward to working with you at 119.”th Support Congress to ensure the safety and security of the American people. ”

The Hill has reached out to Thune's office for comment.

Schumer's call for his successor came after two New Year's Day attacks rocked the community.

In New Orleans, a man named Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, plowed into a pickup truck on busy Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning, killing 14 people and injuring many more.

The attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism, as Jabar was carrying an ISIS flag and was in possession of explosives.

Just hours later, a Cybertruck exploded outside President-elect Trump's Las Vegas hotel, killing a man inside. Seven other people were injured.

Authorities are investigating whether the two incidents are related.
