Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he has “substantively” discussed President-elect Trump's choice to fill the seat with Gov. Kristi Noem (R.S.D.).
Mayorkas appeared on ABC's “This Week” and was asked about the transition. Noem was nominated by President Trump to lead DHS if confirmed by the Senate.
“I have spoken with Governor Noem numerous times regarding the horrific terrorist attack, including on New Year's Day and immediately after,” Mayorkas said Sunday.
He was referring to the terrorist attack in New Orleans. A man plowed into a pickup truck on busy Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning, killing 14 people and injuring many more.
“We have had substantive conversations about the steps we will take, and I am incredibly committed to ensuring a smooth and successful transition for Governor Noem if she is confirmed as Secretary of Homeland Security,” Mayorkas said. I am working with dedication.”
He said he praised Noem's “focus” on the issues discussed.
Noem's nomination comes after she was previously floated as President Trump's running mate and spent the year focusing on immigration issues. She has deployed the South Dakota National Guard to the southern border and supported President Trump's expansive immigration plan.
President Trump's selection of Noem is one of the latest signs that he intends to take a tough stance on immigration policy, including implementing the mass deportation plan he campaigned on.
