In Florida, three teenagers became unlikely heroes when they paused to assist a man struggling to change his tire, ultimately saving his life during a heart attack.
The group, made up of Brody Murray, 17, and Logan Royer, 16, was enjoying a meal at McDonald’s on April 19 when they spotted Diego Fernandez Delgado at the roadside. They decided to lend a hand, as reported by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.
Magrone reported that, while attempting to change the tire, Fernandez Delgado, 65, suddenly fell ill and asked the teens to call for an ambulance.
Royer quickly dialed 911 while trying to assess Fernandez-Delgado’s condition, who appeared pale and exhausted, struggling with chest pains.
“There’s an old man on the side of the road. We’re helping him change his tire and he’s not feeling well at all,” Royer said during the call to 911.
When paramedics arrived promptly, they diagnosed Fernandez-Delgado with a heart attack. He later underwent multiple procedures at the hospital but was eventually discharged.
“I think we were very lucky. It was just the right place and the right time. Maybe God put us there to help this guy,” Murray reflected in an interview with Good Morning America.
“It doesn’t cost anything to be a good person. You never know where it will lead,” Magrone noted as well.
Fernandez Delgado’s son, Cristian, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the boys in a statement, noting they truly saved his father’s life, especially since he didn’t have a phone to call for help.
“God did not send an angel with wings; He sent those boys,” Cristian remarked.
The City of Cooper took time to formally honor the teens for their quick thinking and kindness in a special recognition meeting on Tuesday.
“Their decision to call 911 was crucial, but what truly makes this story remarkable is everything that happened before that moment,” wrote the sheriff’s office in a statement. “Their actions serve as a powerful reminder that sometimes, the difference between life and death begins with simply choosing to intervene and help.”
