A New York City man wanted for the shooting death of a Brooklyn teen has finally been indicted, nearly five years after he fled to the Caribbean.
Anthony Regis Ashe, 24, was charged with second-degree murder in Brooklyn Supreme Court on Monday, two weeks after being extradited from Trinidad and Tobago.
Regis Ashe, who lived in Brooklyn, is accused of fatally shooting 18-year-old Sharif Richards during an attempted robbery on Canarsie Road in September 2021.
“Brutal ambush and murder [was] “This was a heinous act of violence that shattered a young life and devastated a family,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who filed the charges.
“The extradition of the alleged perpetrators from Trinidad and Tobago reaffirms our unwavering commitment to meet this callous disregard for human life with the full force of justice,” he added in a statement.
Regis Ashe was named as a suspect just over a year after the boy's body was found lying next to a wrecked car with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Regis Ashe's girlfriend, Amari Harvey, 24, was identified in security camera footage from the night Richards was killed, which showed her getting up and getting into the car.
Regis Ashe then allegedly approached the car wearing a mask and hoodie, leaned out the window and attempted to rob the vehicle.
The suspect then allegedly shot Richards in the chest, the boy drove away, and after a crash several blocks away, Harvey slid out of the car and left the scene with Regis Ashe.
A warrant for Regis Ashe's arrest was issued in October of the following year, but the U.S. Embassy in the country said he had traveled to Trinidad and Tobago several months earlier, in June 2021, and was staying there.
His girlfriend was arrested at JFK Airport in January 2022 before boarding a flight to the island.
Regis Ashe was extradited on December 22 and brought back to the United States by the Sheriff's Office.
In addition to murder, he is also charged with attempted robbery and weapons possession.
He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison and is being held without bail.
Harvey is also charged with murder, attempted robbery and weapons possession, and his bail is set at $1 million.
