Woody Johnson promises new hires will make Jets fans ‘proud’

The Jets cast a wide net Monday, submitting interview requests for head coach and general manager candidates employed by each team.

As far as we know, there were nine coaching interview requests and six GM interview requests.

These are in addition to candidates who are already known to be interviewed or who are scheduled for interviews.

The Jets will also interview current interim coach Jeff Ulbrich and interim general manager Phil Salvage for full-time positions.

In an exclusive interview with The Post before Sunday's season finale against the Dolphins, team owner Woody Johnson said he was confident in the team's search process, which he is managing but former GM Mike He said he has support from Tannenbaum and Rick Spielman.

“We're going to have guys here that are going to make them proud and make our team proud on and off the field,” Johnson said. “We only interview the people we hire. We don't just do it for fun.”

The Jets have requested interviews with the following head coaching candidates: Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, and 49ers quarterbacks coach Brian. Griese, Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown, Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smy S.

The team has already met with former Commanders and Panthers manager Ron Rivera, former Titans manager Mike Vrabel, and is scheduled to meet with Rex Ryan, who coached the Jets from 2009 to 2014, on Tuesday. .

Of the new names that surfaced Monday, six were offensive players and three were defensive players.

Four of them, Flores, Joseph, Nagy and Smith, have previous head coaching experience. The Jets would like to acquire someone with experience for one of the two jobs.

Glenn and McCown both played for the Jets.

Glenn was the team's first-round pick in 1994. Brady and Smith both interviewed with the Jets in 2021 when the team hired Robert Saleh. Smith was a finalist for the job.

One notable person the Jets are not scheduled to interview is Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is considered one of the top coaching candidates.

Sources said the Jets did not request an interview because they felt Johnson was not a good fit for them.

As for general manager interviews, there were six requests known to have been made on Monday: Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi, Bengals senior personnel officer Trey Brown and Rams senior personnel officer. Ray Farmer, Buccaneers assistant general manager Mike Greenberg, Vikings vice president of player personnel Ryan Grigson and Eagles assistant GM Alec Halaby.

The team has already interviewed former Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff, former Titans GM John Robinson, Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy and ESPN analyst Louis Riddick.

Farmer and Grigson are former GMs, but if the Jets decide they want someone with experience in that chair. Greenberg grew up on Long Island and interned with the Jets under Tannenbaum from 2008 to 2009.

The Jets are able to interview GM candidates directly, so the GM could be hired first.

As for coaches, the Jets could interview Griese, whose team was eliminated from the playoffs, as well as Glenn and Nagy, whose team received a first-round bye this week.

All coaching interviews will be conducted virtually through January 20th. Coaches with playoff games this weekend will not be able to conduct virtual interviews until next week.
