Cowboys stall on Bears’ Mike McCarthy interview request

The Cowboys appear to be in no hurry to find a coach for the Bears.

The Dallas organization “has not yet responded” to Chicago's request to speak with current Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy about the Bears' vacancy. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Tuesday, a day after the NFC North club first requested permission.

This is the latest chapter in a season-long coaching saga for McCarthy and the Cowboys, but it remains to be determined whether the Super Bowl-winning coach will sign a new deal to remain in Dallas with his contract expiring on January 14th. I haven't.

McCarthy, who has a 49-35 record in five seasons at the helm, expressed confidence in his abilities Sunday as Dallas' season ended with a 23-19 loss to the Commanders.

“I have a lot of confidence in myself as a head coach. But, you know, I think as much as the body of research and all the statistics, the program, the specifics of what we need to do, how we can improve, is important. “I think so,” McCarthy said. “All of these things influence the decision to take the job first or keep moving forward. So I'm definitely in the next position. [owner] jerry [Jones] To move forward. I mean, there's no question in my mind about it. ”

Mr. McCarthy added that he planned to meet with Mr. Jones “in the near future.”

The Bears are wasting no time finding a replacement for Matt Eberflus, who was fired midway through the 2024 season.

The city of Chicago formally requested an interview with McCarthy, 61, on Monday. The Cowboys don't have to give teams permission to see him for another week.

McCarthy has extensive experience with the Bears, having played against them twice a year as the Packers' coach.

He coached Green Bay from January 2006 to December 2018, winning one Super Bowl.

McCarthy and the Cowboys finished the injury-plagued 2024 season with a 7-10 record.

He is being considered by Bears leadership to fill the coaching vacancy, including Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn and former Titans coach Mike Vrabel, who will meet on Wednesday. He is one of several coaches.

The Jets, Saints, Patriots, Jaguars and Raiders, who parted ways with Antonio Pierce on Tuesday, are also looking for new coaches this offseason.
