President-elect Donald Trump said at a press conference Tuesday morning that he would seek to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
President Trump was speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach, Florida, on a variety of topics when he made the announcement.
“What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate. It's appropriate.”
President Trump said, “I will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.'' “What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate. It's appropriate. And Mexico must stop the influx of millions of people into our country.”
President Trump has signaled that relations with Mexico will become more contentious under his administration over criticism that the country is not doing enough to stem the flow of illegal immigration. In an earlier announcement, President Trump said he would impose a 25% tariff on the country if its leaders did not help combat illegal immigration.
“We hereby demand that they use this power. Until they do, it's time for them to pay a very high price!” Trump said at the time.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded in an open letter, warning that both the U.S. and Mexico would suffer economically if President Trump's tariffs spark a trade war.
“Mexico's major exporters to the United States include General Motors, Stellantis, and Ford Motor Company, which entered Mexico 80 years ago,” the statement said. “Why impose tariffs that put them at risk? Such measures are unacceptable and will lead to inflation and job losses in both the United States and Mexico.”
He also noted that Mexico is already working with U.S. law enforcement to deter illegal immigration.
