Defense wins championships.
At least that's what Notre Dame and Penn State are hoping for this year.
The two clubs, both featuring elite defenses, will put that theory to the test when they square off in the Orange Bowl on Thursday, January 9th at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
To advance to this high-stakes semifinal, Marcus Freeman's Fighting Irish defeated highly anticipated No. 2 Georgia 23-10 in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. This attack was not particularly effective in the contest. Quarterback Riley Leonard completed 15 of 24 passes for 90 yards and just one touchdown. Meanwhile, he also led the team in rushing, en route to 80 yards a day.
In Arizona, James Franklin's Nittany Lions defeated Boise State 31-14 in the Fiesta Bowl. Quarterback Drew Aller had three touchdowns and running back Kaitlan Allen led the way with 134 yards. But most of all, it was the defense that kept the Broncos in check, and Penn State never relinquished the lead after scoring in the first quarter.
Now, the Fighting Irish and Nittany Lions are one win away from the College Football Championship, which will be held in Atlanta on January 20th.
And if you want to go to the Orange Bowl and see their scraps, it's not too late to get last minute tickets.
