Former Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz told Fox News Digital on Wednesday that he is “considering the opportunity” to potentially run for governor.
The former congressman said he would need to take “active steps towards running” toward the end of 2025 if he ultimately decides to step into the ring.
Gaetz, who recently began hosting the One America News Network show, said many Floridians have encouraged him to run, and he thinks it's a little early to make a decision, but he's praying about the prospect and spending time with his wife. He said he would talk to him.
He said he is “deeply concerned” about rising prices for property and casualty insurance for Floridians. “I know how to fight the special interests that have been jacking up prices in my home state,” he said, adding that if he believes he can “make a positive difference,” he will make the move. He said he would consider it “significantly.”

In response to a Tampa Bay Times report that Gates said he was “starting to think about running for governor,” Democratic Florida Sen. Jason Pizzo declared, “And I'm going to kick his ass.” I responded.
Shortly after his 2024 reelection victory in Florida's 1st Congressional District, Gates quickly resigned from Congress after President-elect Donald Trump announced he would be his nominee for U.S. attorney general.
However, later that month, Gates withdrew from consideration for the role.
“There is no time to waste on needlessly protracted Washington brawls, so I am withdrawing my name from consideration for attorney general. The Trump Justice Department must be staffed and ready from day one.” he said in a post on X. .

President Trump has endorsed Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis for Gates' former House seat. The Republican primary will be held later this month.
The House Ethics Committee's report states, “The committee found that Congressman Gaetz did not comply with House rules or other conduct prohibiting prostitution, statutory rape, illegal drug use, impermissible gifts, special favors or privileges, or obstruction of Congress.'' “We have determined that there is substantial evidence that the standards have been violated.”
