CNN senior political data reporter Harry Enten watered down President Joe Biden's recent claim that he could have won re-election had he stayed in the 2024 race.
After President-elect Trump's landslide victory in November, many Democrats have weighed in on what they could have done differently, and Biden is no exception.
When asked, USA Today interview Biden said this week that he would have won had he not abstained on July 21. “It's presumptuous of me to say that, but I think so.” USA Today summarized that he continued, “Based his views on polling that he has reviewed.”
But Enten said Biden's claims are nonsense.
“Based on polling data, I classify Mr. Biden's statement that he could have beaten Mr. Trump as 'absolute lunacy,'” he wrote in a post on X on Wednesday. “Biden was far ahead of Trump when he left office. He has never led through 2024, and no incumbent president who was less popular than Biden has ever won. do not have.”

In a video posted alongside the tweet, Enten said: “Why am I saying that his statement that he could have won the 2024 election if he had stayed in the race is completely ridiculous? I want you to take a look here,” he said in detail.
He also pointed to poll numbers from around the time Biden dropped out of the race, particularly in the Great Lakes battleground states, where “Donald Trump was leading in all three states.”
“But it wasn't just that Trump had an advantage, he had a huge lead in these key battleground states,” he said, after showing similar advantages in other key areas.
“What a blessing,” he said, marveling at then-President Trump's lead, broadening the scope of his analysis.
“Now let's look at the 2024 campaign as a whole. “In 2024, when Biden was still in the race, the days when Biden led Trump,'' he said, pointing to a giant zero on the screen. “Understand this: Zero! There was no day! There was no day when Biden was better than Donald Trump.”

Enten summarized his findings after showing that there is no record of an incumbent winning with a negative approval rating.
