This approach differs from Meta's model, which relies on third-party, independent fact-checking organizations to flag misleading posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads (X's competitors).
However, CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that Meta will stop working with these organizations and will instead implement an X-like community notes feature. Zuckerberg also unveiled a series of other major changes to the company's moderation policies and practices aimed at giving people more freedom of expression.

Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday that the social media company would stop working with third-party fact-checking organizations. on video Zuckerberg said in posts on Instagram and Facebook that the company's content moderation approach too often resulted in “censorship.”
“Since Trump was first elected in 2016, legacy media outlets have written nonstop about how disinformation is a threat to democracy,” Zuckerberg said. “We have never been the arbiters of truth. “We have sought in good faith to address these concerns.” “But fact checkers are far too politically biased and are destroying more trust than they've built, especially in the United States.”
Zuckerberg said Meta will end its fact-checking program with trusted partners and replace it with a community-driven system similar to Company X's Community Notes.

For those who don't know, X's Community Notes lets users collaborate to add context and fact-check potentially misleading posts. If a Tweet is flagged as containing incorrect information or lacking context, users can submit a note providing additional information or correcting the inaccuracy.
These notes can be reviewed by other users, who can upvote or downvote posts based on their usefulness and accuracy. Once a note receives enough support, it will appear below the original tweet, providing a balanced perspective and helping inform others.

However, independent fact-checkers are not happy with the changes.
“Fact-checking journalism has never censored or removed posts. We add information and context to controversial claims and debunk false content and conspiracy theories. Meta also reduces censorship.
Zuckerberg also announced plans to overhaul Meta's recommendation system, which determines what content is shown to users. The company has been restricting political content for years, citing user feedback and concerns about how social media influences beliefs.
“We've built a lot of complex systems to manage content, and the problem with complex systems is that they make mistakes,” Zuckerberg said. “Even if we accidentally censor just 1% of posts, that's millions of people, and we've reached a point where there are too many mistakes and too much censorship.”
He added that Meta will eliminate some content policies on controversial issues such as immigration and gender, and refocus on automatic moderation for what he calls high-severity violations. Going forward, the company plans to take a more personalized approach to political content, allowing people to see more of it in their feeds.
Additionally, Facebook plans to move its trust and safety and content moderation teams from California to Texas. Zuckerberg also said Mehta would work with the incoming Trump administration to promote free speech worldwide, but did not provide specific details.

Meta's platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, are more tightly controlled than platforms like X, giving users less freedom of expression. The changes announced by Mr. Zuckerberg on Tuesday are intended to loosen those rules and allow people to share their ideas more freely. This may lead to more offensive content, but that's the tradeoff for more freedom. The introduction of community notes is also a nice change. Rather than leaving community notes to a small number of people who may be biased towards a particular political party or issue, users will have more control.
