Churches Burn; Synagogue Scorched, but Survives; Rabbi’s Home Lost in Palisades Fire

Religious sites were not spared in the Palisades fire that broke out in Los Angeles on Tuesday and Wednesday, with many churches damaged and destroyed.

One of the first religious buildings known to catch fire was the Presbyterian Church on Sunset Boulevard, which was gutted except for its iconic cross tower.

The nearby concrete building of the Kehillat Yisrael synagogue was unharmed, but Rabbi Daniel Sher's home was completely destroyed.

Corpus Christi Catholic Church and the adjacent school appeared to have sustained little damage.

The complex housing Chabad in Pacific Palisades, near the ocean, was damaged, but the synagogue's main building survived.

Firefighters also fought to save the Lake Shrine, home to a large and popular spiritual and meditation center known as the Self-Realization Fellowship.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the shrine itself was intact, but several surrounding buildings had been destroyed.

This complex houses part of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes.

The scale of the losses in the Pacific Palisades is almost impossible to explain. Half of the community was simply destroyed. Thousands of homes and families fled for their lives but lost everything.

There is no doubt that centers of faith and worship will be important in the future.
