Mel Gibson: Loss of Malibu home in LA fires 'devastating'

Actor and director Mel Gibson said Thursday that his Malibu home was destroyed by wildfires raging in the Los Angeles area, calling the experience “devastating.”

“It's emotional,” Gibson said in an interview with “The Elizabeth Vargas Report.” “There was a load there, and it was all cinders, so we were relieved of the burden of the load.”

Gibson also said he was in Austin, Texas, appearing on Joe Rogan's podcast when he learned of the fire. While talking to Logan, he says he was “unsettled” after hearing that his neighborhood was on fire.

“I thought, 'Well, maybe there's still a place for me,'” he said. “When I got home, sure enough, it wasn't there.”

Gibson added that she was surprised by the severity of the damage and the randomness of which homes were destroyed in the neighborhood.

“(The area) was completely burnt down. I've never seen a burn site so completely burnt out,” Gibson told Vargas, adding that she didn't know if they would rebuild there, but that people who live nearby and He said he is grateful for the generosity of residents. In fact, his family was safe.
