New study finds that icy New Yorkers are least friendly Americans

New York is the least friendly state in the nation, according to a new study.

World Population Review's 2024 Friendliest States Study examines the personal travel experiences of more than 2.5 million tourists, the average tipping rate for each state, and an Instagram survey to rank the level of friendliness across the country. The results were compared and discussed.

New York's Concrete Jungle came in 50th, or last place, despite an average tip rate of nearly 19%.

The people of Gotham didn't buy it.

“New Yorkers are nice, but they're not nice on the outside,” said Joe Massaro, 40, a Long Island native and Manhattan native. That's what I need. ”

But who needs a smile when New York City is swaggering?

The Big Apple has been named the second best city in the world, according to the 2025 World's Best Cities Guide by international consulting organization Resonance.

“Indomitable spirit” was cited as the top reason.

The Empire State isn't the only region on the East Coast that needs a crash course in etiquette.

Delaware ranked third from the bottom on the list of friendliest states. It was followed by Massachusetts (46th), New Jersey (45th), New Hampshire (43rd), and Rhode Island (40th).

A polite Minnesotan won the trophy for friendliest American, followed by Tennessee and South Carolina.
