I Expect the Laken Riley Act Will Pass ‘with 60% or More in the Senate’

Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.) said Sunday on CNN's “State of the Union” that the Laken Riley Act, named after a 22-year-old Augusta University nursing student killed by an illegal immigrant, received 60 votes in the Senate. He said it would be passed. Or more.

Host Jake Tapper said: “Speak to Congress now. The Senate this week passed your bill, the Laken Riley Act, which would require federal custody of undocumented immigrants charged, arrested, or convicted of robbery, theft, or shoplifting. You passed a bill to move it forward. You have support from some Democrats. Other Democrats said the way the bill was written would result in thousands of people being detained indefinitely simply because they were accused of a crime, even though they had never actually been charged or convicted. Are they wrong?

Britt said, “Oh, look, the Laken Riley Act is ultimately going to save lives. It's a common sense bill that actually does what we've been talking about for the last four years.'' Jake, past 4. No issue over the years has been more litigated than President Biden and Vice President Harris' open border policy. I am ready for the American people to decide on this on November 5th and ensure a secure border. We want our streets and communities to be safe and secure, and this is the first step in doing so.”

She added: “This is a targeted bill that goes directly to the heart of the tragedy that happened with Laken Riley. As you know, Friday was her 23rd birthday. then she should still be with us That means Americans are ready for common-sense solutions, ready for us to stop talking and actually deliver results, and many Democrats are on board with this bill. people who expressed support for I'm encouraged by this and I think we'll get more support as we continue to discuss this this week and discuss its merits. And you know, Jake, this bill was introduced once last Congress. not twice It passed in the House with the support of 37 Democrats. This year, it was supported by 48 Democrats, making it a bipartisan bill with 60% of the House. We expect it to receive more than 10% of support.”
